How we build a concrete base
We excavate the area and remove topsoil and roots, then lay and compact a MOT Type 1 sub-base. Next we fit timber shuttering and a damp-proof membrane, and add steel mesh reinforcement where needed. The concrete is laid level, or with a slight fall where the building needs it, and finished to suit. On sloping sites we can build up the level with blockwork or excavate into the slope, using our ground levelling experience.
Bases for garden rooms
Garden room suppliers usually specify exact dimensions, tolerances and service entry points. Send us the specification and we'll build the base to it, including ducting for power and data. We can also dig the cable trench to the house at the same time.

How thick should a concrete shed base be?
A typical shed base is around 75–100mm of concrete on a compacted sub-base. Garden rooms, garages and hot tubs usually need 100–150mm with steel reinforcement.
How long before I can build on the base?
Concrete can usually be walked on after a day or two, but it is best to wait around 7 days before erecting a building, and longer for heavy loads.
Do I need planning permission for a garden building?
Many garden buildings are permitted development, but limits apply to height, size and position, and different rules apply in conservation areas. Check with your local council or the building supplier.
